League Rules

REGULATE YOUR OWN PLAY.

In all situations where there is a disagreement between both teams, please be adults and replay the point.

Rally scoring 3 games to 21. Win by 2, cap at 25.

The winning team is responsible for updating your scores after each match on the website. Failure to do so results in a tie game.

Rock paper scissors and the winner chooses if they want to serve first or they may pick the side of the court.

Tips- no open hand tips/dinks. The ball must leave the hand clean without controlling or redirecting (the player may not "steer" the ball with an open hand).

Net- you may not touch the net at any time or the point is given to the other team.

UNDER THE NET: Players may go under the net only if they do not interfere with a player or ball on the other side of the net. The opposing team decides if there was interference.

Foot digs/kicks- legal

Let serves- if a ball touches the net and crosses to the other side, it is legal and can be played normally.

Blocks- blocks are not counted as a team hit. Your team has 3 touches allowed after a block.

Footwear: Players may not wear cleats of any kind. Players may play barefoot or with other shoes.

Co-ed rules: there may never be more than 2 men on the court at any time. Any other combination of 4 players is allowed.

Players on the court: all four players are live at all times (server can block and spike from anywhere on the court).

Rotations: the most commonly used rotation in grass 4s is diamond (i.e. front row player (the setter), two hitters (left and right) and a back row player (server), however teams can line up in any formation they choose. While players must serve in rotation, they are allowed to line up in any position or rotation.

PASSES & SETS: Hand sets can be done at any time. There is not a rule against hand setting during serve/receive and returning non hard driven balls.

Players should call their own double (open hand, finger-tip pass to your partner for an attack), with “cleanliness” being dictated by the level of your team’s registered skill level, NOT by the player’s personal skill level (i.e., recreational leagues should be a venue to learn and practice setting so most sets will be okay, within reason, while competitive leagues will be expected to have exclusively higher-level sets).

OUT OF BOUNDS AND BOUNDARY ROPES: Poles are considered out of bounds (substitute for the antenna) and the ball must travel inside the poles when crossing the plane of the net. If a player contacts the poles or support ropes, play may continue unless it affects the point.

Rare but worth mentioning: If a player inadvertently pulls out the boundary lines; if it is only slightly out of place, you may continue the point and determine where the ball should have landed based on the original location of the line; or if the line is pulled completely out its original spot, stop the rally, and replay the point.

Time-Outs: each team is allowed one (1) 30 second time-out per game.
